4-H Events

4-H Expo

A variety of 4-H project workshops are offered to select from for a day of fun while learning. They include foods, animal science, gardening, science and technology, sewing and crafts.

Public Presentations

4-H members develop public speaking skills, organization, poise and confidence while they do their presentations. 4-H members and alumni praise the 4-H program for teaching these life skills that help them to be successful in school, community and in careers.

Harvest Food Fest

Ontario County is a strong agricultural producing county where foods are grown from A to Z or apples to zucchini. Each fall the 4-H program presents Harvest Food Fest. This event showcases 4-H members and food preparation skills, while making their favorite recipe in a silent presentation for the public. Recipes selected by the members are required to include at least 1 cup of a New York State or Ontario County food product. This 4-H Event is popular with members of all ages showing off milk shakes, zesty chicken wings, grape pie or an apple biscuit sandwich.

4-H Achievement Day

4-H members are recognized yearly for accomplishments obtained while doing 4-H products. Certificates and award trips for all ages are awarded to members who reach criteria and goals during the year.

Ontario County Fair

The highlight for 4-H members is to participate each summer in the Ontario County Fair. Exhibits of completed 4-H projects, participating in contests and showing 4-H project animals in confirmation and showmanship classes are part of 4-H at the fair. 4-H members accompany their projects when they are evaluated on the Danish system of judging and are presented ribbons for their placing.

Non-animal projects are displayed during the fair in 4-H club exhibit areas in the 4-H building. This showcase of 4-H is popular with fairgoers to see the fine variety of projects our youth have completed during the year.

New York State Fair

Ontario County 4-H members are very active at the New York State Fair. Traditional 4-H projects and animal exhibits are selected for exhibition from county fair participation. Many of our youth compete in contests in livestock, rabbit and food preparation. 4-H teens actively participate in many teen leader positions during the fair. They serve as assistants in the youth building, work as press corp members writing news releases for fair happenings, teen evaluators assisting with exhibit judging and in other leadership capacities during the fair. Thousands of fair visitors stop by the Ontario County exhibit during the fair to participate in hands on activities offered by our teen members and 4-H volunteers.

Textile Review

Sewing is a 4-H project that Ontario County 4-H members are able to learn from club and county leaders. Each spring the 4-Hm embers show their sewing project off at the Textile Review. 4-H members of all ages participate by constructing items with fabric and sewing such as clothing, pillows and home furnishings. The Clothing and Textile program, like all 4-H projects, build on youth development and skills learned by advancing with each project.
